چکیده

The multipeg Towers of Hanoi problem consists of k pegs mounted on a board together with n disks of different sizes. Initially these disks are placed on one peg in the order of their size, with the largest at the bottom. The rules of the problem allow disks to be moved one at a time from one peg to another as long as a disk is never placed on top of a smaller disk. The goal of the problem is to transfer all the disks to another peg with the minimum number of moves, denoted by H(n, k). An easy recursive argument shows that H(n, 3) = 2n−1. However, the problem of computing the exact value of H(n, k) for k ≥ 4 has been open since 1939, and in particular, the special case of H(n, 4) has been open since 1907. In 1941, Frame and Stewart each gave an algorithm to solve the Towers of Hanoi problem based on an unproved assumption. The Frame–Stewart number, denoted by FS(n, k), is the number of moves needed to solve the Towers of Hanoi problem using the “presumed optimal” Frame–Stewart algorithm. Since then, proving the Frame–Stewart conjecture FS(n, k) = H(n, k) has become a notorious open problem. In this paper, we prove that FS(n, k) and H(n, k) both have the same order of magnitude of 2(1±o(1))(n(k−2)!) 1/(k−2) . This provides the strongest evidence so far to support the Frame–Stewart conjecture.

Solutions to the generalized Towers of Hanoi problem

The purpose of this paper is to prove the Frame-Stewart algorithm for the generalized Towers of Hanoi problem as well as finding the number of moves required to solve the problem and studying the multitude of optimal solutions. The main idea is to study how to most effectively move away all but the last disc and use the fact that the total number of moves required to solve the problem is twice ...

The Number of Moves of the Largest Disc in Shortest Paths on Hanoi Graphs

In contrast to the widespread interest in the Frame-Stewart Conjecture (FSC) about the optimal number of moves in the classical Tower of Hanoi task with more than three pegs, this is the first study of the question of investigating shortest paths in Hanoi graphs H p in a more general setting. Here p stands for the number of pegs and n for the number of discs in the Tower of Hanoi interpretation...

Toward a Dynamic Programming Solution for the 4-peg Tower of Hanoi Problem with Configurations

The Frame-Stewart algorithm for the 4-peg variant of the Tower of Hanoi, introduced in 1941, partitions disks into intermediate towers before moving the remaining disks to their destination. Algorithms that partition the disks have not been proven to be optimal, although they have been verified for up to 30 disks. This paper presents a dynamic programming approach to this algorithm, using tabli...

On the Frame-Stewart algorithm for the multi-peg Tower of Hanoi problem

It is proved that seven different approaches to the multi-peg Tower of Hanoi problem are all equivalent. Among them the classical approaches of Stewart and Frame from 1941 can be found.

Recent Progress in Heuristic Search: A Case Study of the Four-Peg Towers of Hanoi Problem

We integrate a number of new and recent advances in heuristic search, and apply them to the fourpeg Towers of Hanoi problem. These include frontier search, disk-based search, parallel processing, multiple, compressed, disjoint, and additive pattern database heuristics, and breadth-first heuristic search. New ideas include pattern database heuristics based on multiple goal states, a method to re...
